How to begin urban sketching - step by step
Urban sketching is incredibly popular. It's all about connecting with the place you are in. And others love to sketch as they travel or visit new places. But it can be intimidating sketch en plein air, or to put it more simply - in public. How do you get started? What happens if someone comes to look over your shoulder? Do you need lots of equipment for urban sketching? I thought I would try to answer all these questions and rather than do it from the comfort of my studio, I am inviting you to join me on location. This sketch took about 45 minutes to do. I've cut out a few little bits but it is pretty much step by step. I am sharing my process in this film. It's all about trying to captur...

Review of Hahnemuele watercolour papers - bamboo, agave and sugar cane - The Natural Line
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.22 часа назад
Watercolour paper is so important to the successful outcome of your painting - more than the paint you use, the brushes you choose or sometimes even your skill and experience. Generally it is made of cotton or cellulose and generally we think of cotton as being better due to its strength and ability to hold water. But growing cotton is pretty intensive on water and chemicals and even if the cot...

oh good!
Love this Liz❤. Thanks again.
You are so welcome!
Thanks
thank you too!
Thank you Liz I find this very inspiring 😊
You are so welcome!
I would have loved to have seen a review on the quality
I have done a detailed review of the watercolour here ruclips.net/video/TplJYtaStO4/видео.html
I discovered your channel through your bookmark videos and have loved exploring all the tiny landscapes I can paint (all my coworkers have bookmarks now 😊) and now I’ve done a deep dive into your urban sketching tutorials. I’ve sketched my house this weekend (twice!) and really like how it turned out. I’m so happy to have found you - I’m 53 and brand new to sketching and painting of any kind, you make all these things feel very accessible. I thank you, my creativity and my mental health thank you as well!! And knowing literally nothing about art supplies (I bought some tombow markers for journaling and found I could use them for watercoloring) your product reviews are very helpful in figuring out what I want (and don’t want) to buy next. Very happy subscriber!! ❤
what a lovely message! Thank you. I want to make watercolours achievable/accessible so it is music to my ears!
And I can confirm, they looked amazing in real life too! ❤
ha, ha! you can!
Thank you so much for posting this video. I painted my brother and it turned out awesome.
Brilliant to hear!
Thank you very much for this Liz I had a little practice today and succeeded! One little doubt I have however, is that if you are trying to sell your work , and do not succeed, you would not be able to remove the painting I presume! I love the look of it though!
No, once it is mounted there is no way of removing it
I'm very new to watercolour, so new that when my colour mixing didn't give me the colours I wanted e.g. your "new" green green, I gave up. Now I have seen the explanation as to why I wasn't getting what I wanted, I'm going back. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
please don’t give up on watercolour. It’s a gorgeous medium
Does it matter whether the paper is pulp or cotton?
in general cotton is stronger than cellulose, but there are very soft cotton papers which will rip with masking fluid and excellent cellulose ones. So there isn’t one rule, I’m afraid
@LizChadertonArt 😥 I have never been able to get it to work without damaging the paper. I tried it on hot press paul rubens and cellulose stillman and birn with equally disastrous results. Started thinking maybe it's the brand I'm using that's bad, and not the paper. I had Malatow masking fluid and just ordered Peebo, and we will see if that helps.
@@michelletulumello661 I find Pebeo Drawing gum (white or blue) the least aggressive
Loving all your instruction as a newbie painter! Thank you!
You are so welcome!
Can't stand the moleskine. It really washes out your colors. You should try the stillman and birn beta or zeta. It made a world of difference for me because it's mixed media paper that's actually intended for watercolor washes.
I love the Moleskine simply because my son gave it to me. I’ll take a look at those others too
@LizChadertonArt I liked it for pen and ink colored pencils and markers a lot. It's just not sized and therefore doesn't really show the colors of watercolor at their brightest.
@@michelletulumello661 in general I say to people that it is better to use a biro on copier paper and sketch, rather than wait to find the best supplies and not sketch… but I do take your point
@LizChadertonArt I can see both sides of this debate, and it's an interesting one. (I should have been more specific in my original response and said I can't stand the moleskine for watercolors.) I taught art for years, and in spite of being regularly criticized by the admins for the expense, I insisted on Crayola products for my classroom. The off brand- (rose art, I think) colored pencils and crayons were really waxy, and some didn't even allow you to color dark enough to create a solid layer of color. Their watercolors were terrible and barely had any pigment in them. Even my little kids would get super frustrated with the results. That said, I wholeheartedly agree with your statement that even a pen on copy paper can be a great way to draw. I do think, however, that when you have a product that doesn't perform according to its stated purpose, that's an issue. I don't think the Moleskine sketchbook fits into that category, though. It says it's intended for dry media and does a great job for that. They do have an actual watercolor sketchbook made by the same brand, which would probably work great for you. I haven't tried it, but I have heard it's decent. That said, there's also the artists preference to be considered. I have seen artists (including myself) use materials in all kinds of ways in which they are not intended to be used and have success with doing that. If you like the results of painting on unsized paper and it works with your style, then of course you should do that, and I would be the last person to tell you not to. 😀
First off... Thank you! Thank you for sharing your vast knowledge and your incredible art! I absolutely love this look, and it pairs perfectly with your fun and impressive animals. I love the animals you created with this technique and then made pins out of them. Secondly, the person who said you didn't pronounce goo-wash right needs to get a life! Who does she think she is... the language police? So, from one sane artist to another... you can pronounce it any way you want. Thank you for sharing your expertise! 😊🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞
aww thank you! The language police make me laugh, because it’s been said before. I usually say I wouldn’t go into a tyre shop and ask for Michelin tyres in my best French accent - can you imagine if you asked for Meeesh -eh - lan? Gwarsh just puts people off and I don’t want to put anyone off painting.
ok I have to be honest I will stick to my arches even if my daughter don't like Arches. she says it like sand paper lol. she like Stonehenge. I know that a lot of people talk about environmentally friendly paper but in the end we should use what we enjoy and what gives us the finish result that we feel happy with.
I understand. Different papers suit different people, but I love trying new ones because they encourage you to paint in a new way.
Thankyou for showing the reference photo! I’m 18 and just about to go into College to study art and design. I’m nervous since I’m not as advanced as my peers, but your videos have helped me so much! Love your content ❤️❤️❤️😁
Lucky you. You will learn so much and have an amazing time. Try not to compare yourself. They chose you for the course for a reason!
Guess I'll have to have a good look around The Range, thanks Liz.
You never know what you’ll find (good and bad)
Thank you very interesting. I have to admit I always thought that sugar paper was made from some part of the sugar plant - no I checked up and it's made from wood pulp 🙂 I like that you can get a pad of all the different papers, very useful.
I have no idea why sugar paper is called that - I will ask Mr Google
Oh wow that was very interesting to see how well the Aquaboard works. I’m glad to see that some of my techniques are suitable for painting with this surface. I’m a bit disappointed that the salt technique doesn’t work as well. Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts and putting this surface through the paces. I’m going to try this out just for the fun of playing around with it.
Glad it was helpful!
Isn't gouche water based ? Thc
Yes, it has to be otherwise it won’t dissolve and take away the excess ink. It stains tge paper why the colour remains
@@LizChadertonArt fascinating. thank you!
Thanks for sharing, Liz. This is so beautiful.
You are so welcome!
What do you use the magic eraser for?
lifting watercolour, you can see here: ruclips.net/video/El3vCzazMxw/видео.html
This is a wonderful painting and technique, but that's not how you pronounce gouache...
Yeah lol 😂 its more like go-wash. She pronounced it better the second time she said it
yes, I know it ‘gwarsh’, but I am about making art accessible to people. I have found gwarsh confuses the hell out of most beginners and new artists, so I deliberately call is goo-ash
Thanks for detailed review, picked up a set on Amazon for £26.99 as a limited time deal. Now price sitting at £29.99. Currently swatching out paints and colours are lovely.
oh, I do love a bargain!
With that wooden ruler, if you flip it over so the numbers are facing down, and press down on one side, you'll lift the other side up from the page.
yes! I didn’t know that when I did the film, but a few people have told me - every day is a school day!
Great ideas, thank you!
Glad you like them!
Thank you Liz, interesting comparison. I do like Hahnemuhle paper though the sizing is slightly different to the Bockingford I think. I have the Britannia and some Agave but haven't seen the bamboo or sugar cane yet. I agree with you the surface of the agave seems quite soft. The bamboo looks interesting to try out.
I think Bockingford is internally and surfac sized (I would need to double check). I, going to use them some more and see how I get on….
Hullo Liz, I have used the bamboo paper from Hahnemule and I was happy with the results in my painting. I have purchased the sugarcane but it has not arrived yet! I have the Harmony paper in all 3 surfaces but it does not hold up as well for me. I have to say I am just a little bit rough when testing, I do use more mixed media and sometimes I use my watercolor paper for my work even ink or markers, so my paper must be up to the tasks I put them through!
it’s fascinating how much impact the papers make, isn’t it? If you are rough, avoid the Agave!
can I ask what type paper is in your homemade journal? It is absolutely fantastic!
you can see me make it here: ruclips.net/video/2wF5Nqb3P34/видео.html It is eco paper from Jackson’s - this is an affiliate link: tidd.ly/3VKcoGd
Have wondered about these since I love Hahnemuele sketchbooks and paper. Thanks for sharing.
worth a try! I thought the idea of their sample book was great
It looks like only the agave comes in the selection pad. They also make very small pads (about 3x4inches size) that are between $2 & $5 at my local art store.
I saw those tiny books and wondered what use they were, but I don’t paint small. I hope you enjoy them
Ohh I love that you got the same results as me with the Bamboo paper! I recently bought 2 pads of it to try and I loved 🥰 how well it worked for me! I did a recent video review on my own channel. I have yet to try the Sugar Cane, Agave, or Harmony papers yet. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these new alternatives for painting. Enjoy your weekend Liz!💕
this is the link to Colleen’s review: ruclips.net/video/rrg5DvQ0uzs/видео.html Imagine your surprise with the pads being sontiney! you made me laugh as they sent one of those pads to me first ….in a huge box! eventually I got the sheets…
@@LizChadertonArt I’m so glad that you watched mine! Thanks so much for sharing my link 🔗 too! I really appreciate it! 🥰
Hi Liz, thanks for another wonderful review! I just bought some Clairefontaine Bamboo watercolour paper, I'm going to put it through the same tests and will let you know how it behaves
It seems similar to the Hahnemuele bamboo paper, but it is a super smooth surface!
I didn’t know Clairefontaine did one!
great for your detailed botanicals??
Indeed, wonderful for botanicals!
@@joellewatercolour I guessed 😆
Brilliant! A great service to all artists. Well done.
my pleasure 😊
I will be having a trip to the Range tomorrow without doubt,to buy more stuff to try and find space for in my already overfilled drawers and cupboards! 😂😂🤦🏼♀️🇬🇧
oops, sorry!
where does it say how much she made with 1 mil views, did i miss it?
I showed you all the stats and money!
When you were trying your set of manga pens, I was wondering if they were like Pitt pens made with India ink. if you use them on plain paper they soak in and become permanent almost instantly. But, if you use them on a sealed surface such as gesso, you have a minute or two before they dry to apply water and blend. Please let us know if any of the suggestions you've gotten have made them usable. It sure would be nice since they were so cheap. You got some absolutely AMAZING bargains! Wish we had some place like that in the US to get such bargains! Isn't mixed media absolutely wonderful? In my 60+ years I've tried many, many needle arts and fine arts, and liked pretty much everything, but now that I've discovered mixed media I've fallen in love! There really are almost no limits to what you can combine!
So far I cannot get those pens to blend nicely, which is weird as they are water based and not alcohol. And yes, loving mixed media too (though watercolour is my first love)
This is great Liz - I'm going to visit my local Range store. I really love your use of modelling paste and will try it! It's lovely to see your creative journal - I remember you being a bit sceptical about creative journelling when you started it! I definitely started following in your footsteps ❤
I was skeptical! I've learnt so much!
You know you get me in trouble every time I watch lol😂 but I learn about new stuff I didn’t know was out there and for that I thank.
oops!
I get all my art stuff from the Range
you are ahead of the game 😊!
Do people really think they are suppurting Ukraine and her people by buying watercolors? Guys, come on... Ur not supporting them any more than ur harming Russia by not buying White Nights. Some people really are naive... Boasting about it on the internet is even more stupid. Because you guys are making no difference. But keep telling yourself you do, if it makes you sleep better. Im gonna stick with my beloved White Nights and Sonnets. The people who produce them have nothing to do with Putins attack on Ukraine, so why should I boycott them? Its just stupid... I might try Rosa as well, but that doesnt mean Im giving up on St. Petersburg.
I don’t think anyone was ‘boasting’, but would you not agree it is better to do something than to do nothing? Economic sanctions do have an impact. A tube of watercolour makes no difference; Millions of barrels of oil do; it is a continuum.
@@LizChadertonArt Yeah, ur right. I'll just go and buy Paul Rubens instead. Oh, wait. Arent I supporting the chinese regime, child labor, slavery, etc. then? And why isnt anyone boycotting Paul Rubens? Btw, Rosa started producing their wc in 2018 according to their website. And their paints look and feel very similar to St. Petersburgs paints, which are much older and have been around since the 30s or so. Makes you wonder if Rosa stole their formula or something like that... Either way, I dont trust this brand. They could be also working with St. Petersburg for all we know, sharing their profits, while you guys think you make a difference by not buying St. Petersburg paints. In the end people are doing it to stroke their own ego, lets be honest...
Fantastic video! Very helpful, thank you so much for sharing!
You are so welcome!
Thanks for the instruction! BTW, I LOVE the room with all the windows. If I had that, I would just move my bed in there and live in it. It's SO wonderful to have a space where you feel like you're outdoors, but don't have to deal with bad weather.
it is nice to get lots of light!
Is it possible without watercolour ground? Or alternatives to watercolour ground? Will a raw non gessoed canvas work well enough or will watercolour ground still be required?
Some people paint directly onto canvas, but if you want it to support the wet in wet techniques Tgat are so part of watercolour, then it is best to prepare. On raw canvas, it will sink in and feather like blotting paper, which is fine If that’s the effect you want
@@LizChadertonArt thank you
Thanks for the review, i consider to add gold to my drawings actually, but i'm very careful with gold use. Because of course, it enrich a drawing, but it depend which drawings. I saw beginners putting gold on their drawings, and being more appreciated than better drawings without gold. It"s like it just need gold (or glitter, because it's the same with glitter) to be appreciated. In fact, i love gold almost only in illumination books from the middle-age or classical statues, because here, it have a true sense of elevation. So i'm even careful with my own drawings, because i want to deserve to use gold^^.
Gold leaf can be very addictive and it needs to be used with consideration just as you would with other marks and media, for sure!
